I was watching a documentary on the History Channel on September 11th and felt inspired to draw this. I meant it to be a commemorative of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 but due to forces beyond my control, I wasn't able to upload it until September 12th. Instead of glamorizing the images we've all seen of the destruction of the buildings, I wanted to focus on the heroes of that day and the days that followed, and those who were never found or identified.
Here a New York City firefighter and police officer (represented by a dalmatian and a German Shepherd) take their hats off and salute fallen comrades and the innocent victims by a fence at Ground Zero.

Several hours to complete, all pencil except for a little digital work multiplying layers to make it pop more.

Ten years... Ten long years since this happened.... The Firemen who died, the ones who selflessly gave their lives to pull people out of the building... Showed immense courage in the face of danger. They are one of the reasons why I wanted to become a Firefighter... And I will hold their memories in my heart and on the inside of my helmet forever, till the day I die

I didn't lose anyone that day...hell, when it happened i was too young to understand what it meant...when I first saw the planes hitting the towers on video, they'd both already collapsed and the city was blanketed in a cloud of dust...years later when I finally understood what had happened I started studying up on it, learning what I could about that day. And now I cant so much as look at pictures like this without breaking down into tears...its odd considering I'm not even American, I'm Canadian...or maybe it isn't...I'm not sure anymore to tell the truth...what I am sure of is that something went wrong that day...something horrible...and 343 of a country's best and bravest men and women paid for it with their lives, along with thousands of innocents who got caught in the cross-hairs...and untold thousands more are still paying for it...affects of the asbestos in the air are still killing more brave souls who toiled unceasingly to find their fallen brothers and pull them from the rubble. soldiers, deployed to hunt after the people they say did this, died in the thousands while they searched for the people we're told were responsible for that day...so much death...so much wasted life...but why has it been wasted?

Its a question few are willing to ask...and even fewer are willing to answer...but if you dont ask questions...you wont get answers.

I don't think it's odd that you feel that way. I was in Italy at the time, and alot of Italians were choked up as well. When they would hear that we were Americans, they would suddenly get kind of emotional and appologetic. One man who I think had lost his son in the tower actually hugged my mom when he discovered she was American. The terrorists hit the WORLD trade centers for a reason. They don't just hate america. They hate all of us sinful developed western countries. I remember reading an article on the Moscow subway bombings and the photos made me bite my lower lip. They were kind of heart breaking. And I'm generally a cowl son of a bitch...

10 years later, and we have never forgotten. Our nation was made stronger from the events of 9/11, and in our hearts we show our strength and bring together our nation in times of trouble. We are America. United we stand.

Excellent job on the picture, buddy. It's really wonderful and expresses the point of the American tragedy, and the triumph we shall have over it.
